(Sienna) Project Description It's year 2050 and through natural selection, an epidemic has plagued the blood type "B" population! People everywhere are dying and we need you to help. We need to figure out a way to help the blood type "B" population or society is going to end as we know it!
The class is going to be randomly split into four groups representing blood types A, B, AB, and O. You won't know what group you represent until you discover your blood type through research. You will given a piece of paper with a colored dot on it (indicating your unknown blood type), and 1 genetic trait or commonality to that blood type that corresponds. Watch the youtube videos provided to get a better understanding about blood types: Human Blood Types, Finding Your Bloodtype, and The Rh Factor. It will be your job to look up this trait along with other important information about your blood type through these links: "Blood Type Traits""Understanding Genetics", "Blood Groups", "Blood Transfusion". After you have established your blood type, connect with your classmates who have the same blood type and discuss your shared genetic attributes and other findings. With your blood type group, log onto Wikispaces: Blood Type Analysis- there will be one for each blood type. Once you've clicked on your groups blood type work together and answer the following questions through the wikispace:
1) List 3 traits for your specific blood type 2) Who can you give blood to? 3) Who can give blood to you? 4) Knowing your blood type, what possible blood types might your parents have? 5) What ideas do you have about how you can help save yourself (in the event that you are blood type B) or the future type "B" generations?
(Sienna, Daniel, Jolene)
Product
A collaborative effort by the students to post information about specific blood types, and give blood type specific answers on how to suppress the plague. It will allow the students to use the skills they developed from this assignment to see the importance of why knowing what blood type they have will allow them to make future decisions on if they want to donate their own blood to a cause that could possibly save someones life. This assignment also allows the students to work together and learn science in a fun and different way, instead of reading a text book.I feel that once they do this project they will know what blood types can be compatible with one another and which ones reject each other, and they can use their problem solving skill to figure out problems they face in the future. (Tennesa)
Curriculum Connection
A Sophomore in high school is required, according to the Oregon Department of Education, to have certain understandings, which are covered in their curriculum. Each subject holds specific criteria; for science this includes genetics and natural selection. Students in high school are expanding their ability to research, hypothesis and use analysis to come to conclusions. By giving them a project that both includes scientific inquiry and creativity, the students have to collaborate and learn from one another. This allows some students who may not be strong in certain aspects, for example collecting data, to learn from other students in their group. These students are also expanding their knowledge in some of the curriculum's main subjects, genetics and natural selection. The students first discover information and facts on these two concepts in their research and then later must further their understanding when they apply it to their project. With only an understanding of genetics can the students make hypotheses on what possible blood types their parents may have in accordance to their own. This project also focuses greatly on natural selection. A student's understanding of how certain blood types may become more predominant in a population is of great importance when deciding on how large that population is as well as how to help them. (Claire)
Driving Question
What can your specific blood type group do to save future type "B" generations? (Jolene)
Technology Integration
Students will use computers and the internet to research different websites about blood genetics, transfusions and blood type traits. Students will practice navigating and researching different websites about blood to learn new information. The retained information will be used for the students to create a wikispaces site where they can post information they found. (Daniel)
